Public and unlisted Vimeo videos resolve from a URL paste — we pull the audio server-side. Password-protected or private videos need the MP4 dropped directly. Either path returns the same transcript shape.

S1

Welcome back — today I'm walking through the new asset library, the piece most of you asked for last quarter.

S2

Quick question before you start — does this replace the existing media manager or sit alongside it?

S1

Replaces it. The old media manager goes read-only on the first of next month, then sunsets thirty days after.

S2

Got it. And the migration is automatic for existing folders?

Three real options · honest comparison

Vimeo AI captions. 3Play or Rev. Or us.

Vimeo ships AI captions on Standard and up. 3Play and Rev are the legacy human-grade vendors most agencies still use. We sit in between — AI accuracy, URL paste, no upsell on the Vimeo account.

Option 01

Vimeo AI captions

Built into Vimeo's caption editor. Locked to Standard+ plans and English-leaning.

Paste the Vimeo URL — or drop the MP4 for private videos. Works on any Vimeo tier, including free.

Option 03

3Play / Rev

Human transcriptionists for broadcast-grade captions. Slow turnaround, high per-minute cost.

Specific to Vimeo

Three things that bite people on generic transcription tools.

Vimeo's privacy model and music-heavy uploads break naive scrapers. Here's how to route around it.

What goes wrong

  1. 1Password-protected URLs fail silently on most tools. The scraper hits the Vimeo password page, transcribes nothing, and returns an empty file.
  2. 2Music intros and outros get transcribed as garbled lyrics or phantom speech. Generic ASR treats the music bed as voice.
  3. 3Brand names and product names in marketing videos (Klaviyo, Webflow, Figma) come back spelled phonetically — Klavyo, Webflo, Figmuh.

What to flip here

  1. 1For password-protected or private videos, download the MP4 from Vimeo (Settings → Distribution → Video File) and upload directly. URL paste only works on public and unlisted.
  2. 2Turn on Music detection in the job form. We tag music regions and skip them in the transcript instead of inventing lyrics.
  3. 3Paste brand vocabulary into Custom vocabulary before submitting. The recognizer uses it as a soft hint — proper nouns land correctly without forcing wrong matches.

Accuracy · real-world numbers

95%+ on studio audio. Holds up on screen recordings and webinars too.

Vimeo hosts everything from polished brand films to raw conference uploads. The ceiling is set by the recording, not by Vimeo's player. Numbers below come from real customer Vimeo files in production.

97%+
Studio-recorded brand video

Single narrator, treated room, broadcast mic. 48 kHz stereo source. Effectively a script-match transcript with timestamps.

94%
Product demo or screencast

Voiceover over screen capture, occasional UI sounds. Diarization usually skipped — one speaker, clean signal.

91%
Webinar or panel · 3-5 speakers

Mixed mic quality across panelists. Acoustic diarization splits voices; expect a quick rename pass on the speaker chips.

86%
Live event or field capture

Room mic, crowd noise, music beds between segments. Words usable, occasional misses on proper nouns and overlapped speech.

Common questions

8 things people ask about Vimeo transcription.

01Can you pull from a Vimeo URL directly?+
Yes for public and unlisted videos — paste the vimeo.com link and we extract the audio server-side. Password-protected and private videos need the MP4 downloaded first (Vimeo → Settings → Distribution → Video File), then uploaded here.
02Will the SRT upload cleanly back into Vimeo?+
Yes. We output WebVTT and SRT against Vimeo's caption schema — drop the file into Vimeo's caption editor (Video Settings → Captions and Subtitles → Add) and it appears on the player immediately. No timestamp drift, no encoding errors.
03How is this different from Vimeo's built-in AI captions?+
Vimeo's AI captions require a Standard plan or higher ($20/mo), are English-strongest, and don't include speaker labels. We work on any Vimeo tier including free, support 99 languages, and label speakers acoustically.
04Do you support Vimeo Showcase or whole-channel batches?+
Not as a one-click import yet. You'd paste each video URL individually, or zip the MP4s and send through the bulk upload endpoint. A native Showcase connector is on the roadmap, not shipped.
05What about Vimeo Events — can you transcribe a live stream?+
Not live. Vimeo Events records the stream to your library after it ends — once the recording lands, paste its URL or download the MP4 and we transcribe like any other video. Expect 5-10 minutes of post-event delay before Vimeo finishes the recording.
06Will chapter markers show up on the Vimeo player?+
Yes. We generate timestamped chapter markers from topic shifts and output them as a Vimeo-compatible chapter file. Upload through Vimeo's chapters interface (Pro and Business plans only — chapters aren't on the free tier).
07What if the video has background music the whole time?+
Turn on Music detection in the job form. We tag music regions and skip them in the transcript — instead of inventing lyrics or marking silence, the output simply notes [music] with timestamps. Works well for brand films and trailers.
08Is this accurate enough for legal or broadcast captions?+
For internal review, training, and most marketing use — yes. For broadcast FCC compliance or court-admissible records, no — those require human verification, and 3Play or Rev's human tier remains the right call. We're frank about that line.
